Life, the Universe and everything stupid that fucks me up..

I know many countries consider us a third world country and that we have been known to be quite animalistic in our approach to life as maltese people but never have I been felt cheated as much as today. It's 00:41 am on saturday 7th (Happy B'day Jean) and have just been driving home across the birkirkara bypass coming from swieqi. This is one of the nicer roads in malta. Thankfully, it hasn't been plagued by the normal and natural occurance of huge potholes every 22.486 cm as most other roads in malta. It's a fairly straight arterial road which has been made all the more important as it now connects the rest of malta to 2 of the greater achievements of the maltese republic. I'm talking about none other than the University of Malta and the great Mater Dejn Hospital.

As dictated by the highway code used for theoretical driving exams the speed limits in malta are as follows:

Residential areas: 50 Km/H
Non-Residential: 80 Km/H no wai!

It seems that the central goverment needs some money in order to finance the frivolous spending of our 2 greater achivements. It is with great pleasure that the government has taken upon itself to install several new cameras on this road along with several disgusting signs dictating that the speed limit on these roads is set to 60Km/H.

And here I am, asking myself why. The first obvious idea that comes to mind is that the government loves us so huggy mucky much and thus does not want us speeding and having great big accidents. WROONGGGGGGGGGGG.
This is nothing else but a huge scam in order to rob us taxpayers of our money just to finance frivolous money spending on new cars, petrol, expensive meals and overly expensive journeys to other countries. In a world were all companies are being encouraged to use video conferencing in order to save time, money and pollution by travelling, why can't our government set the example and stay the FUCK in malta. I'm quite sure they would love the opportunity of going through the tender process and spending ridiculous amounts of money on the project.

Why would the highway code have 80km/h speed limits and one of the few straight, non residential roads in malta gets limited to 60 ? Do they think that the general public is thick ? The only obvious reason is that they want to surprise unwary drivers and get a nice interesting photo of their number plate for a fine. Seriously, if they wanted to care about the way people drive, they should simply lower the speed limit of non residential roads to 60 all over malta. It would save a whole load of taxpayer money not having to pay for new speed camera's to be bought, people paid to install them, pay for all the signs to be made and installed by yet more people. Obviously this doesn't conform with stalin gonzi's regime of more money = more party and thus we spend a shitload of money that could be spent on the roads in reality to stop people from having to swerve into lamposts and speedcameras and fill some of the bloody pothole. The only upside of this that one day we might actually find the remains of some old saint buried in a tomb undernearth a road that would have been swiftly eroded by the torrential waters that plague the maltese roads after a light drizzle of rain. Ode to the rain water project invested in a few years ago ofcourse.

I would actually turn the argument right on its head ... the roads have been commissioned recently and are according to the specifications of government. Why on earth would the speed limit be down to 60km/h if the road was built "correctly"?

That's just one road mate... what about Tal-Barrani, Sta Venera, and especially the one at Hal Far... straight residential roads... on the Tal-Barrani Road they actually changed the signs from 70Km/H to 60Km/H. And it's ironic how the cameras are all strategically placed in all the non-pot holed roads in Malta. I'd prefer the roads to Marsascala (any of them) to have speed cameras than to look like they've just come out of The Capital Wasteland (refer to Fallout 3)
